How to Deter Slugs in Your Garden
Got slugs?!
Lowcountry summers typically come with abundant rains and that also means more slugs! A slug's body is 80% water and without a protective shell, they're highly susceptible to drying out, which is why they come out after rain to roam and forage.
But we don't want them munching on our plants, so consider the following solutions to deter slugs from your gardens:
🐌 Scatter coffee grounds, crushed eggshells, diatomaceous earth or course mulch around base of plants (refresh after it rains).
🐌 Cover the base of your stems by cutting a 3-5" slit long-way through a portion of paper tube. Bury the cardboard slightly into soil to secure and enclose the base stem of your vulnerable plants!
🐌 Make a DIY slug trap with beer! Just bury a shallow container (like an empty tuna can or plastic cup) in the soil so the rim sits level with the ground. Pour in 1-2 inches of cheap beer (yeasty beers work best). The sweet, fermented aroma will lure in the slugs.
